Electricity prices are likely to rise by Rs. 0.48 per unit for one month under the monthly fuel price adjustment mechanism.
The Central Power Purchasing Agency has filed a request with the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority seeking an increase in electricity tariffs for December. NEPRA is scheduled to conduct a public hearing on the application.
According to the petition, 8.487 billion units of electricity were generated in December, while 8.208 billion units were supplied to distribution companies. The average cost of electricity during the month stood at Rs. 9.62 per unit.
In terms of the energy mix, hydel power accounted for 18.07 percent of total generation. Local coal contributed 13.99 percent, while imported coal made up 10.13 percent. Electricity generation from natural gas stood at 11.20 percent, and imported LNG accounted for 17.24 percent. Nuclear power was the largest contributor, providing 25.05 percent of total electricity generation in December.
If approved by NEPRA, the proposed fuel price adjustment will be passed on to consumers in their electricity bills for one month, adding to the existing burden of high power tariffs.
