A 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck northern Afghanistan early Monday, causing severe damage in several areas near the city of Mazar-e-Sharif. Local officials confirmed that at least 10 people have been killed and more than 150 injured, with the number expected to rise as rescue operations continue.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the quake occurred at a depth of 28 kilometers, with strong tremors felt across Balkh and Samangan provinces. Many residents rushed outdoors in panic as buildings shook during the night.

Authorities said Balkh and Samangan were among the worst-affected regions. Emergency teams from the Afghan Taliban’s Ministry of Defence have been deployed to assist with evacuations, medical aid, and relief efforts. Hospitals in nearby districts have been placed on high alert to treat the rising number of injured people.

Officials also confirmed that parts of the historic Blue Mosque (Shrine of Ali) in Mazar-e-Sharif were damaged. Videos shared on social media show collapsed structures and rescue workers clearing debris in search of survivors.

The USGS issued an orange alert, warning of likely widespread damage and significant casualties.

Afghanistan is highly prone to earthquakes due to its location on active fault lines. Poor infrastructure and limited emergency resources often make the impact more severe. The country has suffered several major earthquakes in recent years, including one in August that killed more than 2,200 people in eastern Afghanistan.

This latest disaster comes at a difficult time for the country, which is already struggling with economic hardship, drought, and the return of displaced families from neighboring countries. Humanitarian organizations are expressing concern that Afghanistan may not have the resources needed to manage another large-scale crisis
