A powerful earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale struck southwestern Turkiye early Tuesday morning, injuring at least seven people and causing widespread panic in several cities. The tremor, recorded at a depth of 75.1 kilometres, occurred at approximately 2:17 am local time and was felt across a broad region, prompting residents to flee buildings in fear of aftershocks.

The epicentre was located in southwestern Turkey, though foreign media reports suggest it may have been closer to the Greek island region, with some placing the depth at around 68 kilometres. Turkish authorities have not yet confirmed these varying seismic data points.

According to local officials, emergency response teams were immediately deployed to assess the impact and provide aid. Seven people were injured due to the quake and have been transported to nearby hospitals, where they are reportedly in stable condition. Authorities are continuing building inspections to ensure structural safety.

Footage aired by local media showed residents gathering in open spaces, some wrapped in blankets to cope with the early morning cold, as tremors continued intermittently. While no fatalities have been reported, emergency services remain on high alert amid concerns of potential aftershocks.

This latest earthquake highlights Turkiye’s vulnerability to seismic activity. The country is situated on several active fault lines, and major earthquakes are a frequent threat. The memory of the devastating earthquakes in February 2023, which claimed over 50,000 lives in southeastern Turkey and northern Syria, remains fresh in the public consciousness.

Seismologists and emergency planners are urging citizens in high-risk zones to remain prepared and follow safety protocols during seismic events. Further evaluations of infrastructure and updated safety advisories are expected in the coming hours as officials continue to monitor the situation.
