President Asif Ali Zardari on Thursday signed the 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill, officially turning it into law after its approval from both houses of parliament. With the president’s signature, the amendment is now formally part of the Constitution.
The final step came just hours after the Senate passed the bill with a two-thirds majority during a tense and noisy session. The upper house witnessed loud protests, walkouts, and strong objections from opposition lawmakers as the government moved the legislation forward.
The bill had earlier been returned to the Senate by the National Assembly after fresh changes were made. These updates sparked heated debate over the amendment’s clauses, the disqualification process, and the broader political impact of the new constitutional changes.
Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar presented the revised version in the Senate, explaining the amendments approved by the National Assembly. The Senate chairman confirmed that the lower house had made “some amendments” to the earlier version and had sent it back for reconsideration.
With the president’s approval, the 27th Constitutional Amendment now takes full effect, marking a major shift in constitutional and political developments in the country.
