In many places across the nation, the price of sugar has surpassed the Rs. 200 per kg threshold. The Ministry of National Food Security & Research attributes the price surge to market manipulation, stockpiling, and smuggling.
Details indicate that the price of sugar in Balochistan’s Noshki can go as high as Rs. 220 per kg. Sugar is being offered for about Rs. 200 per kg in many other province cities, such as Quetta, Kohlu, and Washuk.

Sugar may be purchased in Peshawar for ranging from Rs. 195 to Rs. 205 per kilogramme. Sugar is priced between Rs. 170 and Rs. 190 per kilogramme in Punjab. The cost of sugar is roughly Rs. 180 per kg in some other significant cities, including Multan, Karachi, and Lahore.

It is important to note that the Ministry of National Food Security & Research was instructed by the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet to work with all relevant agencies and authorities to stop the smuggling and hoarding of sugar during its most recent meeting. The ECC also requested that the ministry promptly disclose the most recent information on wheat stock, availability, and prices.
Over the past four months, the cost of sugar has grown by more than 80%. The nation was exporting sugar, with exports totaling 5,542 metric tonnes in July, despite the commodity’s growing price. However, since the export of sugar has been prohibited since August 10, no more sugar will be exported.
