Private airlines are raising the cost of domestic flights dramatically in an attempt to capitalize on Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) current operational difficulty.
Reports in the regional press state that domestic flights on private aircraft cost between Rs. 40,000 and Rs. 70,000. Flight tickets from Karachi to Lahore now cost up to Rs. 50,000 more.
Likewise, fares for a one-way flight from Karachi to Islamabad range from Rs. 55,000 to Rs. 61,000.
With the national flag carrier unable to address its fuel shortfall, private airlines have increased the cost of their tickets. About fifty flights have been cancelled by PIA in the past several days.

A PIA representative asserted that once funding for the fuel purchase is secured, the flight schedule will return to its regular timetable. He further mentioned that PIA’s own resources were used to organize the funds.
The representative also expressed regret to the travellers for any trouble the delayed and cancelled flights had caused.
