Utah prosecutors have announced they will seek the death penalty against Tyler Robinson, the man accused of killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk during an event at Utah Valley University (UVU). The charges were formally filed on Tuesday, marking a major step in one of the state’s most high-profile cases.

Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray confirmed the decision in a press conference, saying it was made after carefully reviewing the evidence and the severity of the crime. He explained that the choice to pursue the death penalty was not taken lightly, but the circumstances of the case demanded the harshest punishment allowed under state law. Robinson will remain in custody without bail at the Utah County Jail.

Robinson faces seven charges, including aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm causing serious injury, obstruction of justice, witness tampering, and committing a violent offense in the presence of a child. Prosecutors also highlighted aggravating factors that could increase his chances of receiving the death penalty if convicted.

During his first court appearance, Robinson appeared virtually wearing a suicide-prevention smock. He showed little reaction as Judge Tony Graf appointed him a public defender, setting the next hearing for September 29.

The charges also reveal new details about the September 10 shooting. Investigators say Robinson entered the university dressed in black and climbed onto a rooftop about 160 yards from where Kirk was speaking. Surveillance footage shows him hiding a rifle in his clothing and walking awkwardly before opening fire. After the attack, Robinson reportedly fled the scene.

Officials believe Robinson may have targeted Kirk because he accused him of “spreading hate,” though prosecutors stressed the investigation is still ongoing. Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, was a well-known figure in conservative politics and had strong ties to former President Donald Trump’s movement.

This case has drawn national attention due to both the political profile of the victim and the rare use of the death penalty in Utah.
