Sony announced on Wednesday that it will raise the price of its PlayStation 5 consoles in the United States by $50, starting August 21, 2025. The company said the decision comes due to economic challenges and new U.S. tariffs on electronics imported from China.

The new prices are:
PlayStation 5 Standard Edition: $549.99 (previously $499.99)
PlayStation 5 Digital Edition: $499.99 (previously $449.99)
PlayStation 5 Pro:  $749.99 (previously $699.99)

Sony confirmed that prices for PS5 accessories and game titles will remain unchanged.

Isabelle Tomatis, vice president of global marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment, said the company had to make a “difficult decision” as global businesses face tough economic conditions.

The increase comes after the Trump administration’s new tariffs on imports from China, Japan, and Vietnam, which have raised costs across electronics and gaming hardware. Analysts say companies like Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo are passing these costs to consumers as prices continue to climb.

Retailers such as Amazon and Walmart have also raised prices on electronics and other products.

The gaming industry is facing widespread price hikes. Microsoft increased Xbox Series X and S prices earlier this year, while Nintendo raised costs for its Switch and Switch 2 consoles this month. Sony had already raised console and PlayStation Plus subscription prices in Europe, the U.K., Australia, and Latin America earlier this year.

The timing is significant for the gaming market. 2025 was expected to see strong console sales with new releases, including Grand Theft Auto VI and Nintendo’s Switch 2. But GTA VI’s delay and rising console prices may slow expected growth.

For U.S. players, the PS5 price hike highlights broader concerns about increasing costs in electronics and entertainment as global trade tensions and inflation continue.
