This action is part of a more significant effort by the PTA to narrow mobile phone regulations and stop the misuse of SIM cards. The PTA works closely with the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) to confirm that all SIMs are linked to the correct CNICs.

In the first stage, which started on August 16, 2024, the PTA blocked over 69,000 SIMs registered against fake or withdrawn identity cards. For the 2nd phase, the PTA encourages people to continue their Expired CNIC and complete biometric verification with NADRA to avoid having their Expired CNIC SIMs.

The 3rd phase of the PTA’s SIM blocking function is set to begin on October 16, 2024. During this phase, the PTA will target SIM cards recorded under the names of dead individuals. To prevent PTA SIM Blocking, people are advised to update their data with NADRA and their mobile phone operators.

The PTA highlighted that using illegal SIMs is related to various crimes, such as terrorism, online fraud, and financial scams, which threaten national security and public safety. By making sure all SIMs are registered with valid CNICs, the PTA seeks to protect citizens and maintain the integrity of the country’s telecommunications system.
