According to PTA sources, unregistered VPNs are a security issue since they can access private information and inappropriate or unlawful content. The PTA safeguards organizational and public data and blocks access to illegal content.
PTA sources claim that VPN registration started in 2020 and that approximately 20,500 VPNs have been registered in the past 14 years. To date, over 1,422 businesses have registered VPNs.
According to sources, the authority intends to speed up the VPN registration and allowlisting procedure. Nations like China, Russia, Iran, Turkey, and others have prohibited unregistered VPNs. Some countries only permit VPNs for business purposes, and the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia further prohibit unregistered VPNs. According to PTA authorities, VPN use for business purposes is permitted in Pakistan.
Specifically, Pakistan’s customers have been reporting problems with free VPNs for several hours. Many users rely on free VPNs to access the social media site X; however, they now report that these services aren’t functioning.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, has prohibited using X. This is a significant development. However, he frequently violates this prohibition by employing a VPN to post on X. Regarding the VPN suspension, inquiries made to the PTA spokesperson regarding the blockage went unanswered.
