In a conference briefing to the Senate Standing Committee on IT and Telecom in Islamabad, Rehman announced that the PTA has already registered 20,500 VPNs and is working to increase this number. While there are situations about unauthorized VPN use, especially for accessing blocked platforms like X (formerly Twitter), Rehman stated that the PTA will not take direct action against illegal VPNs. Instead, the focus will be on managing the issue more aggressively once the registration process is complete.
The Interior Ministry officials updated the committee on the status of X in Pakistan, noting that the Islamabad, Sindh, and Lahore High Courts are reevaluating its case. During the meeting, questions surfaced about the legality of using VPNs to access X, with officials confirming that it is illegal. A senator also questioned why the Prime Minister was using a VPN to post his thoughts.
Another senator asked why Pakistan cannot entirely block X if it is already restricted. For the VPN Blocking in Pakistan matter, PTA officials and federal government representatives were unable to provide a clear explanation.
