During the PTA firewall trial, the system effectively blocked pictures, voice recordings, and video downloads on social media platforms. It also reduced mobile internet service speeds and checked for mobile data leaks.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has informed all mobile companies to clear the installation process. The government plans to implement the firewall on all internet service providers, allowing for deep packet inspection to filter social media control data and block content at the IP level. The federal government aims to control the dissemination of any kind of content, with costs shared between the government and ISPs.
Sources indicated that the PTA will oversee the firewall’s installation. In 2018, Pakistan acquired a web monitoring system from a Canadian firm, which remains in use and is currently being upgraded. The new firewall system is expected to function similarly to China’s, using Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) to detect and block sensitive content based on keywords.
