The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has said that responsible use of social media is a shared national responsibility and urged citizens to remain cautious while engaging on digital platforms.

In a statement, the regulator warned that the circulation of illegal, hateful, defamatory, or false content can cause serious harm to individuals and damage the reputation of state institutions and the judiciary. It stressed that such actions weaken public trust and threaten the stability of Pakistan’s digital environment.

The authority reminded users that spreading unlawful or misleading content is a punishable offence under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), 2016. It added that misuse of online platforms not only carries legal consequences but also undermines ethical standards in the digital space.

The PTA reaffirmed its commitment to promoting ethical and responsible online behavior across the country. It said it regularly conducts awareness campaigns and educational initiatives to inform citizens about their legal and moral responsibilities when using social media and other digital platforms.

According to the regulator, these efforts are aimed at empowering users with knowledge, encouraging accountability, and fostering a safer and more trustworthy digital ecosystem. The PTA emphasized that constructive and positive online engagement is essential for maintaining a secure digital environment in Pakistan.
