The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has warned mobile phone users about a growing number of complaints regarding unauthorized activation of Value Added Services (VAS), which are causing unexpected deductions from prepaid and postpaid balances.
In a public advisory, the regulator urged consumers to stay vigilant and regularly check their mobile balance and active subscriptions to avoid unwanted charges.
According to PTA, Value Added Services include features such as caller tunes, daily SMS or internet bundles, missed call alerts, mobile games, horoscope updates, quiz services, infotainment alerts, and other subscription-based content services. The authority emphasized that no VAS can be activated without the clear consent of the user.
PTA explained that activation of such services requires confirmation through a One-Time Password (OTP) or by dialing a specific USSD code. If a user has not shared an OTP or dialed an activation code, the service should not be active, and any such subscription may be considered unauthorized.
Consumers who notice unexplained balance deductions are advised to immediately contact their telecom operator and register a complaint while obtaining a complaint reference number. Operators must be given the prescribed time under regulatory guidelines to investigate and resolve the issue.
If the problem remains unresolved, users can escalate their complaint to PTA through its Complaint Management System available on the official website or through the CMS mobile application.
PTA said it remains committed to protecting consumer rights and ensuring fair and transparent practices across Pakistan’s telecom sector.
