Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has unveiled a landmark Rs15 billion Wheat Support Fund aimed at supporting over 550,000 wheat farmers across the province. This historic initiative comes at a critical time, offering much-needed relief to cultivators grappling with seasonal challenges and market instability.

In a high-level meeting chaired by the Chief Minister, several pivotal decisions were made to ensure financial assistance, improved infrastructure, and better access to credit for wheat growers. Direct cash assistance will be provided to farmers through the Kisan Card, helping them manage rising input costs effectively.

A major feature of the package is the exemption of fixed and excise taxes for wheat growers during the current season, significantly easing their financial burden. Additionally, to safeguard against post-harvest losses and market fluctuations, the government is offering four months of free wheat storage.

An innovative Electronic Warehouse Receipt System has also been introduced. Farmers storing their wheat will receive digital receipts, which can be submitted to banks for loans of up to 70% of the crop’s market value, processed within 24 hours. To support this, the Punjab government will cover Rs5 billion in loan markup for storage financing.

Furthermore, Rs1 billion has been earmarked to help flour mills and green license holders finance wheat purchases, ensuring a smoother supply chain. The government is also moving towards policy reforms by seeking federal approval for the export of wheat and wheat-based products, a step expected to stabilize domestic prices and reduce excess stock.

In another significant move, the provincial ban on wheat and flour movement across district and provincial lines has been lifted, promoting inter-regional trade and market accessibility. To enhance storage capacity, the Bank of Punjab will provide financing for private sector warehouse construction and renovation, with the government subsidizing the markup costs.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif highlighted that this package is not just about immediate financial aid but represents a strategic push toward long-term agricultural sustainability in Punjab.
