The company that produced the vehicle registration cards stopped operations, which put the Punjab Excise Department in a difficult situation.
The “Inbox Company” was given a five-year contract by the department, which expired in May. At a cost of Rs. 438 per card, the business was contracted to deliver 8.5 million cards.
Another 400,000 cards were made after a brief extension of the contract. Before the temporary contract expired, the Excise department delivered more than 80,000 registration cards.
A report claims that in order to minimize the possibility of the entire process coming to a standstill, the government released a late tender. But after the technical bid stage, things have moved slowly.

There are about 2.5 million number plates in backlog for the Excise agency. It is looking into other solutions, like issuing virtual cards, to deal with the problem.

The huge increase in the US dollar’s value relative to the Pakistani Rupee is the cause of the price surge. The dollar was about Rs. 140 when the private company was given a five-year contract in 2018, but it is now worth over Rs. 280.
The smart card that is issued by the Punjab Excise Department contains more than ten security elements, such as a lamination that is distinct, a blue pattern that changes color based on temperature, and a monogram. The raw ingredients needed to make these cards are imported, though.
