Lahore, April 10, 2025 — In a major food safety enforcement action, the Punjab Food Authority (PFA) raided a preserves production unit located in Sundar Industrial Estate, seizing and discarding 12,000 kilograms of rotten and fungus-infested carrot and apple preserves. The operation underscores the authority’s commitment to protecting public health and eliminating substandard food products from reaching consumers.

During the surprise raid, PFA officials uncovered severely unhygienic conditions—with foul smells permeating the facility, preserves exposed to contamination, and stored in non-food-grade plastic drums. Additionally, expired flavoring agents were found onsite, and raw materials were reportedly kept directly on filthy floors, raising serious health concerns.

The Director General of Punjab Food Authority revealed that the unit was involved in producing ‘murabba harar’, carrot murabba, and ‘gulkand’ preserves, all in clear violation of established food safety standards. Alarmingly, the facility lacked basic operational protocols, including medical certificates for workers, staff hygiene training, and mandatory production records.

“These substandard preserves are a grave threat to public health, particularly in terms of stomach and intestinal infections,” stated the DG. The contaminated products were being distributed across urban and suburban markets of Lahore, putting thousands at risk.

The PFA has imposed a Rs. 200,000 fine on the unit and assured that strict legal action will be pursued to hold those accountable for compromising food quality for profit. The authority reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy towards food adulteration and unhygienic practices and urged consumers to remain vigilant.
