The Punjab government has approved a new digital monitoring project designed to counter anti-national, hateful, and misleading content circulating online. The initiative, worth Rs 124 million, will be carried out by the Punjab Home Department and aims to strengthen the province’s ability to track and respond to harmful narratives on social and digital media.
Under the project, a dedicated Media Think Tank will be set up to monitor mainstream media, digital news outlets, and social media platforms around the clock. Officials said the goal is to detect fake or provocative content in real time and respond quickly through verification and corrective communication.
The think tank will closely track major platforms such as X, Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram. According to authorities, this system will help counter modern information threats, including coordinated disinformation campaigns and online messaging intended to create unrest or spread extremism.
Whenever harmful, fake, or inflammatory content is identified, the unit will take immediate action. Regular analytical reports will also be prepared to study trends, identify spikes in misinformation, and guide timely responses.
The Departmental Development Sub-Committee has already approved the project, completing the last stage of administrative clearance. Implementation will now begin, which includes hiring staff, installing monitoring technology, and setting up operational procedures for the new digital oversight system.
