The Punjab government has launched the third phase of the Punjab Archives Digitization Project to preserve historical records and improve public access to the province’s documentary heritage.
Punjab Chief Secretary Zahid Akhtar Zaman inaugurated the new phase of the project at the Civil Secretariat. The initiative is being carried out with the support of the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB).
Officials said the first two phases of the project have already been completed, during which more than 1.1 million historical documents were digitized.
In the third phase, another 825,000 archival records will be converted into digital format using modern scanning technology.
All digitized documents have been uploaded to the official Punjab Archives website, allowing researchers, students, and the general public to view and download historical material online.
During the ceremony, the Chief Secretary also reviewed the ongoing scanning work at the Archives Department and directed officials to further improve the website’s user interface to make it easier for users to access the records.
Officials added that the project is designed to protect Punjab’s historical documents from damage and preserve them according to international archival standards.
