In a major initiative to uplift the Pakistani film sector, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has sanctioned a substantial Rs2 billion grant aimed at supporting local filmmakers and directors. The move is part of a broader strategy to rejuvenate the cultural and creative economy of Punjab, with a focus on enhancing the quality and appeal of local cinema.

According to official statements, only filmmakers and directors who have produced at least one film within the last five years will be eligible to apply for the grant. This eligibility criterion is designed to ensure that the funds are allocated to professionals with a proven track record in the industry.

To ensure a transparent and equitable distribution process, the Punjab government has formed a Film Funds Distribution Committee. The committee will be chaired by Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb and includes several key government officials: Minister for Information and Culture Azma Bukhari, Minister for Finance Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman, the Information Secretary, Planning & Development Secretary, and the Finance Secretary.

The committee will evaluate applications based on the quality and popularity of the proposed films. Applicants are required to submit a detailed film script and cast information, underscoring the government’s commitment to funding only well-developed, professionally planned cinematic projects.

This funding initiative is seen as a significant step in reinvigorating Pakistan’s cinematic landscape, encouraging creative storytelling, and boosting the local entertainment economy.
