Punjab Government Revises Passing Criteria for Science Subjects
The Punjab government has announced its intention to revise the passing criteria for matriculation and intermediate examinations in science courses starting from the next academic year.
According to the Inter-Board Committee of Chairmen (IBCC), students will now be required to achieve an overall score of 66 out of 200 marks to pass each science subject in the annual exams. This marks a departure from the previous requirement of securing a minimum of 33% in both the theoretical and practical tests for passing science disciplines.
Additionally, the provincial administration has agreed to change the timing of intermediate and matriculation exams, with the annual exams now commencing in March of the subsequent academic year. The decision to modify the passing criteria for science subjects was made during a meeting of the IBCC held in Islamabad.
The chairpersons of the nine intermediate and secondary education boards in the province convened to address the issues contributing to a higher number of students failing science courses. The committee examined the grading system for science-related subjects in response to the significant failure rates observed across all boards.
Previously, students had to pass both the theory and practical exams separately. However, many students who performed well in theory exams faced failure due to poor performance in the practical exams. Under the revised requirements, students will need to obtain an aggregate score of at least 66 marks in both theory and practical exams of a science subject to pass at the matriculation or intermediate level, even if they fail the practical test.
Furthermore, considering the extreme heat during summer, the matriculation and intermediate exams in the province will now begin in March. These changes aim to strengthen the education system in the province and provide students with more opportunities to excel in their academic pursuits.
