Residents across Islamabad and multiple districts in Punjab have been urged to remain cautious as the National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC), in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), has issued a severe weather alert for April 18 and 19. The forecast includes heavy rainfall, hailstorms, and strong winds expected to impact both urban and rural areas, increasing the risk of damage and accidents.

Districts including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Gujrat, and Jhelum are predicted to face significant rainfall and hail. Meanwhile, regions such as Faisalabad, Jhang, Khushab, Mianwali, Lahore, Sahiwal, Sargodha, and Sheikhupura have been flagged for potential hailstorms and gusty winds. The adverse weather is expected to lead to power outages, infrastructure damage, and heightened risk to public safety.

The NDMA has highlighted the vulnerability of standing crops to hail damage and advised farmers to implement protective measures promptly. Urban residents are encouraged to avoid standing near trees, electric poles, and weak structures during storms. People are also being urged to keep track of weather updates through the NDMA Disaster Alert app for real-time information and safety instructions.

In addition, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has extended its weather advisory for continued thunderstorms and light rainfall in Punjab through April 20. This follows a deadly weather episode that resulted in nine fatalities and injuries to five others. Lightning strikes in Layyah and Kot Addu were responsible for two of the deaths, while strong winds partially damaged two houses.

Relief Commissioner Nabeel Javed has ordered district administrations and emergency teams to remain fully alert. DG PDMA Irfan Ali Kathia confirmed the activation of the Provincial Control Room and all District Emergency Operation Centres to monitor conditions around the clock. Emergency response units, including Rescue 1122, have been placed on standby to ensure rapid deployment in case of incidents.

The public is being advised to stay indoors during storm activity, avoid open spaces, and steer clear of exposed wiring and electric poles. The PDMA has also stressed the importance of protecting children by keeping them away from vulnerable structures. In emergencies, residents can reach out to the PDMA via their helpline at 1129.

Authorities continue to remind the public that April historically brings volatile weather to the region, citing last year’s tragic toll when lightning killed 30 people in Punjab. This latest alert underscores the need for vigilance and preparedness as extreme weather systems move through the area.
