Rawalpindi Railway Station has undergone a major upgrade, introducing modern facilities and enhanced security systems as part of efforts to transform it into a “Safe and Smart Railway Station.”
The historic station, which is nearly 145 years old, has been revamped with reconstructed platforms and upgraded passenger amenities. New stalls offering tea, snacks, newspapers, and books have been installed, while waiting areas have been improved to provide greater comfort. A Commercially Important Person (CIP) lounge has also been added, and washrooms have been renovated to meet better hygiene standards.
A key highlight of the upgrade is the introduction of a comprehensive security system. CCTV cameras have been installed across the station, including platforms, parking areas, and entry and exit points. Passenger luggage is now screened through modern scanning machines, with real-time monitoring displayed on large screens.
Cleanliness has also been prioritized, with staff from the Rawalpindi Waste Management Company deployed for continuous cleaning operations throughout the station.
Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi said the upgraded station now offers facilities comparable to an airport experience. He added that the project was completed in collaboration with the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO), and includes a network of 184 CCTV cameras, making it the first railway station in Pakistan with such an extensive surveillance system.
The new system enables round-the-clock monitoring of station activities, surrounding areas, and reservation offices, while also helping improve staff performance.
The minister further said similar upgrades are planned for other major railway stations, including the introduction of CIP lounges, separate waiting areas for women and families, free Wi-Fi, and ATM facilities to enhance passenger convenience.
