The cost of the Kutchery Chowk remodeling project in Rawalpindi has been revised upward from Rs. 14 billion to Rs. 19 billion, while the completion deadline has been extended from April 30 to the end of May.

According to officials from the Punjab Communication and Works Department, the extension was necessary as several components of the project are still under construction.

So far, major structural work has been completed, including two flyovers, three underpasses, and key road infrastructure. However, finishing work such as aesthetics, lighting, and drainage systems is still in progress.

Officials cited March rainfall and Eid holidays as key reasons for the delay. They noted that construction activity typically resumes about three days after rainfall, which has slowed progress despite efforts to maintain timelines. Work is currently being carried out in double shifts by the Frontier Works Organization to accelerate completion.

During a recent visit, Rawalpindi Division Commissioner Amir Khattak reviewed the project alongside FWO officials. Engineers and contractors informed him that overall progress has reached 76 percent.

A breakdown of progress shows:

  • Main project site: 74% complete
  • Iftikhar Janjua Underpass: 72% complete
  • Jinnah Park Chowk: 71% complete

Authorities say work is advancing steadily, with completion expected by the end of May if current pace is maintained.
