Report Prove Raising Speed Limit on Road Results More Accidents
In a study, the American Automobile Association (AAA) discovered that raising speed limits can result in more car accidents, whereas lowering them has the opposite effect.
Despite the fact that this makes sense, many people believe that raising the speed limit only buys drivers time at the expense of other road users.
The study is the most recent to demonstrate how speed limitations can impact traffic safety. Half of the twelve highways that AAA reviewed increased their speed limits, while the other half lowered them. The group then analyzed traffic safety and travel times before and after speed restriction adjustments.

There were more crashes, injuries, and fatalities on two of the three roads with high speed restrictions. Even though the speed limit was increased, commute times stayed “comparable” to before. Because other road types with stricter speed restrictions did not see an increase in incidents, injuries, or fatalities, AAA advises more study.
Lowering speed limits had just a marginal impact on commuting times, which could refute assertions that doing so would make driving less convenient and prolong travel times. The report suggests using a “holistic approach” to changing speed limits, taking into account the type of route, the land use, and crash data.
