Samsung Employees Leak Sensitive Company Data to ChatGPT
Initially, ChatGPT was a valuable tool for various work tasks. However, it’s crucial to remember that any information shared with the chatbot could be used to train the system and may appear in its responses to other users.
Some Samsung employees may have overlooked this fact before sharing confidential information with the chatbot.
According to The Economist Korea, engineers from Samsung’s semiconductor division disclosed confidential information to ChatGPT at least three times. One employee asked the chatbot to examine sensitive database source code for errors, another requested code optimization, and a third fed a recorded meeting into ChatGPT and asked it to produce minutes.

In response to the security breaches, Samsung has limited the length of employees’ ChatGPT prompts to a kilobyte and is investigating the employees involved. The company is also developing its chatbot to prevent similar incidents.
ChatGPT’s data policy states that it uses user prompts to train its models unless the users opt out explicitly. OpenAI, the chatbot’s owner, advises against disclosing confidential information to ChatGPT since it cannot delete specific prompts from the history.

The only way to remove personally identifiable information is to delete the account, which may take up to four weeks.
The Samsung incident highlights the importance of being cautious while using chatbots, just like with all online interactions. It’s impossible to know where your data will ultimately end up. Samsung is yet to respond to a request for comment.
