Samsung is Making Special Hardware for Rival Apple
Samsung worked with AMD to create the Exynos 2200, which includes the Xclipse 920 GPU. This system-on-a-chip (SoC) was a crucial step for Samsung to move towards developing its own custom GPU, which is a common practice among smartphone chipset companies like Apple and Qualcomm.
The Xclipse 920 GPU in the Exynos 2200 is based on AMD’s RDNA2 architecture, which is also expected to be used in the production of Samsung’s custom GPU. However, Samsung may require assistance from AMD in developing an IP and will not create a standalone GPU.
Previously, Samsung relied on ARM’s Mali GPU designs for several years but may change this with the development of a custom GPU.
While ARM’s GPU designs are good, Qualcomm and Apple’s custom GPU designs show that the performance gap on Samsung’s side can only be reduced with a custom GPU explicitly made for smartphones.

Revegnus cautioned that the release of Samsung’s custom GPU is not expected for at least three years, and if it doesn’t meet the company’s expectations, the launch may be delayed.
Despite Samsung’s past failures in releasing its smartphone chipsets, with the appropriate expertise, this objective can be achieved.
Additionally, the Exynos 2200s Xclipse 920 performed well in ray tracing performance compared to Qualcomm’s most recent Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, suggesting that Samsung has the potential to compete in this area.
