Advisor to the Prime Minister Rana Sanaullah has said that the draft of the 27th constitutional amendment will be presented before the federal cabinet on Friday. Speaking on a news programme, he explained that after cabinet approval, the draft will move to the Senate and is expected to reach the National Assembly by Monday or Tuesday.
He stated that the amendment draft would also be sent to the relevant standing committees, which will review and discuss it for two days. If the Senate passes the bill early, the National Assembly will require three days to complete its approval process.
Sanaullah said that the government has held consultations with coalition partners and will only implement what has been mutually agreed. Matters that do not have consensus will be taken up later.
He confirmed that the Pakistan Peoples Party and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz agree on forming a constitutional court. Under the proposal, the constitutional court and the Supreme Court would hold equal status, with a chief judge leading the constitutional court and the Chief Justice heading the Supreme Court.
The amendment also includes proposals such as ending dual nationality for certain officeholders and setting a four-year timeline for holding local government elections. Sanaullah added that consultations with Maulana Fazlur Rehman are still ongoing, while the PTI may also give input or move amendments if it chooses.
He suggested that the number of judges in the constitutional court could be around eight and supported increasing the retirement age for its judges. He also noted that the judicial commission would oversee the appointment, confirmation, and removal of judges.
Sanaullah said efforts have been made to maintain cooperation with all political partners and expressed hope that the Pakistan Peoples Party would also support matters related to the NFC Award.
