Saudi Arabia Pledges Support to Tunisia

In the midst of a political, economic, and health crisis in Tunisia, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia promises assistance.

According to a statement issued by the Tunisian Presidency, Saudi State Minister for African Affairs Ahmed Abdul Aziz Kattan met with President Kais Saied in Tunis, and subsequently, top officials discussed cooperation.

King Salman bin Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia announced earlier this month that his country would deliver one million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine to Tunisia. Saudi Arabia has also established an air bridge to provide medical supplies to the North African nation.

Additionally, it is on the verge of bankruptcy, requiring at least $3 billion this year to pay foreign loans and the salaries of hundreds of thousands of public employees.

Some Gulf States viewed Saied’s intervention as hurting the Muslim Brotherhood movement, which they consider their principal regional adversary and associated with the largest party in Tunisia’s currently paralyzed parliament.
