The Supreme Court of Pakistan has ruled that individuals convicted by military courts must be allowed the right to appeal, instructing the government to introduce legislation within 45 days.

The detailed judgment, released on Monday, addressed intra-court appeals filed against the trial of civilians in military courts.

Justice Aminuddin Khan authored the 68-page majority decision, joined by a concurring 47-page note from Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar.

Out of the seven-member bench, five judges supported the appeals, while Justices Jamal Mandokhail and Naeem Afghan dissented.

While affirming the legality of trying civilians in military courts, the ruling emphasized that appeal rights are a constitutional safeguard that must be upheld.
