The Lahore High Court is considering measures that would include two work-from-home days, Friday and Saturday school closures, plus a citywide restriction on Sunday commercial activity to mitigate Lahore’s ongoing smog crisis. During an environmental preservation session, Justice Shahid Karim addressed the plan and encouraged the city’s environmental commission to gather and make a decision on effective anti-smog measures.

Justice Karim emphasized the significance of restoring these techniques in light of the current smog challenges and highlighted last year’s successful initiatives, which included equivalent strategies. After reviewing departmental reports, the court ordered an increased focus on reducing heavy vehicle pollution, particularly from buses, by strengthening terminal inspections and enforcing vehicle fitness standards on highways.
The court expressed reservations about the current “Green Lockdown” policy, stating that it might only serve to shift pollution instead of lowering it and urging more significant fixes. Furthermore, the Punjab Highway Authority was assigned by the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) to maintain and prevent the theft of infrastructure components such as LED lighting as part of its inquiry into maintenance duties for Lahore’s underpasses.
As Lahore’s air quality continues to decline, officials are being urged to intensify efforts to reduce smog and protect public health. This latest court order reinforces the call for action.
