Senate Body Seeks Report on Hurdles in Agricultural Imports

Islamabad: The senate standing committee on commerce has constituted a subcommittee to explore concerns pertaining to imports of important agricultural commodities and report back to the committee of commerce within 30 days.

During its meeting, the committee appointed a subcommittee to investigate issues pertaining to cotton imports, the growth of textile exports, including sales tax on cotton exporters, tariffs on the import of cotton yarn and cottonseed, and to report back to the committee.

The committee also voiced displeasure with the inconsistent grounds for a ban on livestock exports. The committee instructed the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of National Food Security and Research to reexamine the policy with all interested parties and provide their report at the committee’s subsequent meeting.

Abdul Razak Dawood, Advisor to the Prime Minister on Commerce and Investment, and Muhammad Sualeh Faruqui, Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, briefed the committee on the status of trade and commerce treaties, agreements, protocols, and conventions with other nations and international organizations.

They responded to a number of questions and inquiries from the chair and committee members. The secretary updated the committee on the implementation progress of the committee’s prior recommendation.
