The National Highways & Motorway Police has announced the closure of several motorway sections after dense fog reduced visibility to dangerous levels, severely affecting intercity travel across Punjab and Sindh.

According to officials, traffic has been suspended on multiple key routes due to poor visibility. The affected sections include the M-1 from Peshawar to Swabi, M-2 from Islamabad to Lahore, M-3 from Faizpur to Jaranwala, M-4 from Gojra to Faisalabad, M-5 from Rohri to Rahim Yar Khan, and M-11 from Lahore to Sambrial.

Fog is a common winter hazard in the region and often reduces visibility to less than 50 metres, greatly increasing the risk of road accidents. Traffic authorities say that during severe fog spells, road fatalities can rise significantly, which is why temporary motorway closures are enforced as a precautionary measure.

The NHMP issued the advisory on January 12, 2026, noting that fog-related disruptions have already impacted more than 500 kilometres of highways since the start of the month. Passenger vehicles and freight transport are expected to face delays until weather conditions improve.

Early morning reports on January 13 suggested partial improvement on some sections of the M-2, though fog intensity continues to vary across districts. Motorists have been advised to avoid non-essential travel during foggy hours and plan journeys during daylight when visibility is generally better.

The motorway police have urged drivers to follow official updates, maintain safe speeds, and prioritize safety until normal conditions are restored.
