History of Shab e Barat in Islam
Shab e Barat is Known as the night of repentance or pardon, and it is one of the night that the records of the humans who will be born and die this year is compiled. It is believed that during the night of Shab-e-Barat, Allah the Almighty will forgive all the sins and decide the fortune and sustenance of all people for the year ahead.
As Allah’s Messenger Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) told Hazrat Ayesha (R.A) about the midnight of Shaban
“In it, the record is made of every human being who will be born and of every human being who will pass away this year. In it, their deeds are taken up to heaven and in their provisions are sent down”. (Hadees)
When is Shab e Barat 2023 in Pakistan?
Every year Shab e Barat is celebrated on the 15th of Shaban. Same as this year, Shab e Barat will fall on 7th March 2023, Which means the night of 7th March and the day of 8th March 2023. As per on Islamic date, it is on 15 Shaban 1444 AH.
When Shab e Barat 2023 is Observed?
The moon’s appearance serves as the basis for the Islamic lunar calendar. So, according to the Islamic calendar, each month has either 29 or 30 days. The eighth month in the Islamic calendar, Shaban is similar in that it includes either 29 or 30 days. The new date usually starts after midnight. Yet, according to the Islamic calendar, a new day begins when the moon rises precisely at sunset.
Therefore, Shab-e-Barat is observed in the mid of Shaban month (15th Shaban) every year. And the 15th Shaban starts at the time of sunset of the 14th Shaban and is observed in the whole night.

There are some traditions in Pakistan that show how people celebrate Shab e Barat every year. Some people will recite the Quran and perform special night prayers all night. Quran and Sunnah about Shab e Barat
Most Qur’an Tafsir scholars have concluded that there is no such superstitious information concerning Shab e Barat in the Qur’an. Some of the references of Shab e Barat in the Quran are in Surah Dukhan (Surah No. 44, Ayat No. 3-5), which specifies Laila Mubaraka, which is Shab e Barat according to knowledgeable Scholars of Islam.
This night tells us its importance through the Quran and Ahadith, and the best way to celebrate this night is to recite the Quran and offer prayers.
Some Hadith, according to the 15th Shaban Shab e Barat are
“Aisha [May Allah be pleased with her] reports One night when I was missing the Prophet, I went to al-Baqi’ (and found him). He said: “Were you Afraid that Allah would wrong you and that his Messenger would mistreat you?” I said: “O Messenger of Allah, I thought that you might have gone to visit one of your wives.” He said: “On the night of mid-Shaban, Allah Glorious and Exalted descends to the nearest sky, and He pardons more people than there are hairs on the hides of the sheep of the tribes of Kalb.”
Once our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) Said: “Ayesha, do you realize the importance of that night? It’s the middle of Shaban night (a month before Ramadan). Allah Almighty has agreed to accept “Tauba” from his creation (man and woman). On that night, Allah Almighty forgives criminals who seek forgiveness.
Concept of Shab e Barat Fasting in Islam
The last Prophet of Allah Almighty often spends the month of Shaban in Fasting. He (SAWW) Said to Hazrat Ali (R.A)
“When the 15th night of Shaban arrives, wake up for qayam, do nawafil, and observe a fast on the day of the fifteenth of Sha’ban.”
In another Hadees about Fasting in the month of Shaban Hazrat Ayesha (R.A) Said:
“I haven’t seen Muhammad (PBUH) in Nafli Fast in other months as much as in the month of Shaban (1970)”.
