The Pakistan Meteorological Department has predicted that the first day of Shaban 1447 Hijri is likely to fall on Wednesday, January 21, 2026.

According to the department, the new moon of Shaban will be born at 12:52 am on January 19, 2026. However, experts have said there is no chance of the moon being sighted anywhere in Pakistan on the evening of January 19.

At the time of sunset, the moon’s age will be around 17 to 18 hours. Since a minimum age of about 19 hours is usually required for moon sighting, the department said it would not be possible to see the moon on that day.

In Karachi, the moon is expected to remain above the horizon for about 32 to 33 minutes after sunset. In Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, it will stay visible for around 30 to 31 minutes. Despite this duration, visibility is still considered very unlikely, even if weather conditions are clear or partly cloudy.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department also noted that there is no possibility of sighting the moon on the 29th of Rajab. A detailed report has been forwarded to the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, which will make the final announcement regarding the beginning of Shaban.

Shaban holds special importance for Muslims, as the night between the 14th and 15th of the month is observed as Shab-e-Barat. On this night, Muslims offer special prayers, perform nawafil, and seek forgiveness, unity, peace, and prosperity.

Shab-e-Barat is observed about two weeks before the start of the holy month of Ramadan. Many Muslims believe this night is a time when destinies for the coming year are written, which is why believers spend the night in prayer, asking Allah for mercy and forgiveness.
