A high-level committee appointed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is tasked with creating ideas for the deregulation, reform, and possible privatization of the sugar industry.

The committee has 30 days to turn in its findings, according to information that leaked on Thursday. The committee is led by the Federal Minister of Energy and includes the Minister of Finance, the Minister of National Food Security, the Minister of Economic Affairs, SAPM Rana Naseem, and the Coordinator for Agriculture, Ahmed Omar. The convener is the Secretary of the Ministry of Industries and Production.

The committee will look at current federal and provincial laws, regulations, and policies that affect the sugar business. It will include topics like hoarding, pricing processes, import and export, and sugar production.

Reserves, supply, price, and the needs and rights of farmers and consumers will all be taken into account when making recommendations.

To guarantee openness in the suggested privatization process, stakeholder consultation would be conducted.
