In a major step towards improving public transport, the Sindh cabinet has approved the purchase of new buses for Karachi, including double-decker and electric buses. The decision was announced by Senior Minister Sharjeel Memon during a press conference.
Memon highlighted that the cabinet has also decided to automate anti-narcotics efforts to enhance enforcement efficiency. He pointed out that despite the Prime Minister’s promise of 180 electric buses for Karachi, no funds have been allocated yet for their procurement.

To empower women and promote their mobility, the Sindh government has introduced a groundbreaking initiative to distribute free pink scooters to women holding a two-wheeler license. Additionally, a monthly lottery will provide electric bikes to eligible women, including students and working professionals. Women who are not yet confident in riding a bike will receive training from female instructors.
A key stipulation of the program ensures that recipients of electric bikes cannot sell them for seven years, ensuring long-term usage and benefits.
Addressing concerns regarding the design of the new buses, Memon stated that both he and the Chief Minister, who are engineers, had raised objections. Their concerns were later validated, leading to the approval of a final design that meets proper safety and operational standards.
This initiative marks a significant development in Karachi’s transportation sector, promoting sustainable mobility while prioritizing women’s independence and safety.
