The Sindh Government is preparing to introduce new legislation targeting unsafe and dilapidated buildings, as part of efforts to improve public safety across Karachi.

The decision was discussed during a high-level meeting held at the Commissioner’s Office Karachi, chaired by Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah. The meeting was attended by senior officials, including representatives from the administration, the Sindh Building Control Authority, and the Association of Builders and Developers (ABAD).

Addressing the participants, the minister emphasized that protecting lives and property remains the government’s top priority and warned that negligence in dealing with dangerous structures would not be tolerated.

Under the proposed measures, authorities will be required to identify unsafe buildings, ensure the safe evacuation of residents, and carry out demolitions where necessary.

The minister also directed officials to accelerate the digitization of building records, aiming to improve transparency, enhance monitoring, and enable the timely identification of illegal constructions.

During the meeting, officials reviewed lists of hazardous buildings across different areas and set timelines for action. Experts cautioned that recent rains and the deteriorating condition of many structures have significantly increased the risk of accidents, making immediate intervention critical.
