Snap has officially introduced Snap OS 2.0, the latest version of its operating system for AR-powered Spectacles. The new update adds a faster native browser, WebXR support, and several tools designed to make augmented reality more practical and enjoyable.
The new browser is one of the main highlights of Snap OS 2.0. It has been redesigned for speed and efficiency, reducing power consumption while making page navigation smoother. The browser now includes a home screen with widgets and bookmarks, along with an updated toolbar that lets users type or speak website URLs. Other features like browsing history, page refresh, and window resizing make the experience closer to using a laptop.
Snap has also introduced a Gallery Lens for managing captures taken with Spectacles. This feature lets users scroll through a carousel of videos, mark favorites, and share clips directly with friends or post them to Stories without leaving the AR environment.
A new Travel Mode stabilizes AR content while moving in vehicles such as cars or airplanes. This ensures that digital overlays remain steady even during motion, reducing disruptions. Another addition is the Spotlight Lens, which integrates vertical video into the real world. Users can watch videos while doing everyday tasks, and the portrait field of view in Spectacles makes it especially suited for vertical content.
The most important upgrade in Snap OS 2.0 is WebXR support, which allows users to access AR experiences directly from websites. This gives developers more freedom to create immersive projects and brings AR content closer to mainstream use.
The launch follows Snap’s release of its fifth-generation Spectacles for developers last year. A consumer-ready version of the AR glasses is expected in 2026. The timing is also notable, as Meta is preparing to showcase its own advancements in smart glasses and immersive technology at its upcoming Connect conference.
