Health experts are warning about potential dangers hidden in black plastic coffee machines, which are widely used in homes around the world. Recent research suggests that these machines may expose users to harmful chemicals linked to cancer, hormonal issues, and other health risks.

The concern comes from the use of carbon black, a color pigment used to give recycled plastic its dark color. Although it makes appliances look modern and sleek, carbon black contains toxic compounds called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). These chemicals are known to dissolve in hot liquids like coffee. In 2020, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) labeled carbon black as a cancer-causing substance.

Another concern is the use of flame-retardant chemicals in coffee machines. These include brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs), which help prevent fires. However, a 2024 study found that these chemicals can cause serious health problems such as hormone disruption, infertility, increased risk of thyroid and breast cancer, and brain development issues.

Experts warn that children are even more vulnerable to these toxins. Exposure through plastic items, or even indirectly, may lead to long-term effects on brain growth and hormone balance.

To reduce health risks, experts recommend the following:

  • Avoid using black plastic coffee machines, especially those made from recycled materials
  • Choose coffee makers made from stainless steel or glass
  • Use BPA-free machines to avoid hormone-disrupting chemicals
  • Clean machines regularly to prevent buildup
  • Use filtered water to reduce exposure to other chemicals

These small changes can help protect your health while still enjoying your daily cup of coffee. As more research comes to light, consumers are encouraged to choose safer options that don’t carry hidden risks.
