South Africa captain Aiden Markram confirmed that experienced spinner Keshav Maharaj will return to the playing XI for the second Test against Pakistan in Rawalpindi, starting Monday. Maharaj missed the opening match in Lahore due to a groin injury, where Pakistan secured a 93-run win to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Markram expressed confidence in Maharaj’s return, calling him an important addition to the squad. “It’s great to have him back in the camp. He brings a lot of experience and a really good skill set. We’re looking forward to this game, which is an opportunity for us to level the series and improve on the areas we fell short in during the first Test,” Markram said.
Maharaj, 35, is South Africa’s most successful spin bowler with 203 wickets in 59 Tests. His presence is expected to strengthen South Africa’s spin department on what is likely to be another turning pitch in Rawalpindi.
Markram noted that the team had prepared extensively for spin-friendly conditions after the Lahore Test. “We’re expecting it to spin again. We’ve done our homework and are coming up with new plans to counter that and give ourselves a better chance of success,” he said.
South Africa fielded three spinners in the first match, and Maharaj’s inclusion is expected to lead to one of Simon Harmer, Senuran Muthusamy, or Prenelan Subrayen being left out.
Pakistan’s win in Lahore ended South Africa’s 10-match winning streak in Test cricket. The visitors will now look to bounce back in Rawalpindi and draw the series level before heading home.
