A strong earthquake struck parts of Pakistan on Friday morning, creating panic in several major cities and northern districts. The 5.5 magnitude quake had its epicentre in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region, a seismically active zone known for frequent tremors.

According to the Meteorological Department, the earthquake hit at a depth of 195 kilometres. Tremors were felt in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and many districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. People rushed out of homes and offices as buildings shook for several seconds.

In Peshawar, Swat, Charsadda, and Buner, residents reported strong jolts. People in Lower Dir and Mardan also felt the earthquake clearly, while Landikotal in Khyber district experienced aftershocks in the surrounding areas.

In the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, sudden shaking caused widespread panic, with citizens gathering in open spaces for safety. Similar scenes were witnessed in Swat, Chitral, and nearby mountainous areas, where residents feared aftershocks due to the depth of the quake.

No casualties or damage have been reported so far. However, authorities have urged citizens to remain cautious, especially in earthquake-prone regions, and follow safety guidelines in case of aftershocks.

The Hindu Kush region is one of the most earthquake-sensitive zones in South Asia, and tremors from this area often affect Pakistan, Afghanistan, and parts of India. Friday’s quake once again reminded people of the importance of preparedness for natural disasters in vulnerable regions.
