The House Oversight Committee has summoned the chief executives of Discord, Twitch, Reddit, and Steam to testify on 8 October about their platforms’ potential role in online radicalisation and politically motivated violence.
Committee chairman Rep. James Comer said the move follows the killing of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk in Utah last week. He argued that Congress must examine how online platforms were used to spread extremist content and press executives on measures to prevent further misuse.
Discord confirmed it will testify, saying it maintains ongoing dialogue with policymakers. Reddit told Reuters it is investigating whether its platform was linked to Kirk’s death.
Kirk, a prominent ally of former President Donald Trump, was shot while speaking at an event. Authorities said the suspect, Tyler Robinson, admitted the killing in a Discord message before his arrest. Reports suggest the bullets used were engraved with internet memes and video game references.
