Thailand is mourning the death of Queen Mother Sirikit, the beloved widow of former King Bhumibol and mother of the current King Maha Vajiralongkorn. She passed away on Friday night at Chulalongkorn Hospital at the age of 93.
The Royal Household said she died peacefully after dealing with several health problems, including a recent infection.
Queen Mother Sirikit was seen as a symbol of kindness, grace, and stability during her husband’s long reign.
🇹🇭 National Mourning Announced
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul cancelled his trip to the ASEAN Summit to prepare for the royal funeral.
Her body will be kept at Dusit Throne Hall in the Grand Palace in Bangkok, where the royal family and the public can pay their respects.
King Vajiralongkorn has declared a one-year mourning period for the royal family and royal staff.

Life and Legacy
Born in 1932, Sirikit met King Bhumibol while living in Paris with her family. They married in 1950, just before his coronation.
The royal couple became highly admired in Thailand and abroad. They traveled the world, meeting leaders such as Queen Elizabeth II, US President Eisenhower, and even Elvis Presley.

Queen Mother Sirikit was praised for her elegance and often appeared on international “best dressed” lists. She was also deeply involved in charity work, especially projects supporting rural women and traditional crafts.
Her birthday, 12 August, has been celebrated as Mother’s Day in Thailand since 1976, reflecting her title as the “Mother of the Nation.”
🕊 Later Years
Sirikit suffered a stroke in 2012, after which she rarely appeared in public. She continued to receive medical care for years.
Even during political tensions, respect for her and the late King remained strong, showing how deeply they were loved in Thai society.
