A crippled camel from Sindh’s Sanghar district was able to stand on all fours once more a year after suffering a horrifying act of animal cruelty, thanks to a specially made prosthetic limb.
After wandering into an agricultural field in the Mundh Jamrao district of Sanghar in June, the camel, whom her rescuers now call Cammie or Kemi, had her front limb amputated.
The landlord allegedly used a sharp object to mutilate her after becoming furious about the camel searching for food. Authorities took action after the upsetting occurrence was captured on camera and extensively disseminated on social media, sparking national indignation.
Witnesses and animal rights advocates claim that Cammie, who was only eight months old at the time, was left bleeding, writhing in agony, and defenseless.
After videos showing her condition went viral, a criminal case was opened, and at least six people were placed under remand. The camel’s original owner, however, later stopped cooperating and refused to identify the offenders due to the alleged influence of the accused parties.
After the assault, Cammie was placed under the care of Karachi-based Comprehensive Disaster Response Services (CDRS) Benji Project, an animal rescue group. She has been receiving regular veterinary care, rehabilitation, and emotional support at the shelter for the past year.
The U.S.-based company Bionic Pets, which specialises in artificial limbs for animals, created a prosthetic leg specifically for Cammie, which she used to take her first steps in an emotional video posted by the shelter on Tuesday.
Cammie got to her feet! She was cruelly disfigured and abandoned to perish a year ago today. However, she was able to stand on her prosthetic for the first time today,” the shelter posted on social media.
The organisation said, “It’s been a year full of tears, setbacks, and silent courage,” in recognition of the unwavering efforts that went into Cammie’s recovery. At times, we were told to give up and move on. However, we didn’t. Cammie also defended us today. Thank God, we are living in a truly miraculous moment.
The shelter also thanked PPP leader Shazia Marri, the Sindh government, and Bionic Pets for their assistance. Although Cammie is still having trouble acclimating to her new limb, it went on to say that her initial steps are a testament to her tenacity and the victory of kindness over cruelty.
For other mistreated animals around the nation, the prosthetic leg serves as both a medical help and a ray of hope. The shelter stressed that Cammie’s story highlights the value of tenacity, responsibility, and the defense of animal rights in Pakistan.
