There Will Be No Poor Countries by 2035: Bill Gates

Amidst the hustle and bustle of the World Economic Forum in snowy Davos, Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, took the opportunity to spread a positive message through his annual email. Together with his wife Melinda, who co-chairs the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, they penned a 25-page document arguing that the world’s state is better than ever.

Gates asserts that by 2035, almost no impoverished nations will be left in the world, even after adjusting for inflation, using the current World Bank standards for categorizing low-income countries as a basis.

According to his annual note released on Tuesday, Bill Gates expressed his belief that impoverished countries can break free from their current situation. He stated that several countries categorized as developing have already progressed, and he is confident enough to predict the future. Gates anticipates that by 2035, most nations will have attained a “lower-middle income” status or higher, and only a few countries are still considered developing. This statement was made by Gates, who remains the part-time chairman of Microsoft.

He believes countries can benefit from their more productive neighbors and technological advancements, such as new vaccinations, better seeds, and the digital revolution.

According to him, the world’s condition has improved significantly in terms of people’s health and reduction in extreme poverty and infant mortality rates. He also claimed that several countries previously dependent on aid are now self-sufficient.

Returning to Davos for the second year, Gates plans to dispel misconceptions about global development and challenge its most vocal critics. He identifies three significant myths: the belief that poor nations are doomed to remain impoverished, that foreign aid is a colossal waste of money, and that saving lives leads to population growth.

Gates presents a contrary perspective, citing data from academics, the World Bank, and the United Nations to demonstrate that the world is progressing.

He acknowledges that people may hold opposing views because bad news often dominates the media, while positive developments such as improving health or rising prosperity are less visible. Gates emphasizes that countries are becoming wealthier, and while health is improving, there is no media coverage of children who have not succumbed to malaria.
