TikTok is moving beyond short-form video with a major upgrade to its messaging features. The platform has introduced 60-second voice notes and the ability to share up to nine photos or videos in one-to-one and group chats.
The update, rolling out globally in the coming weeks, places TikTok alongside competitors like WhatsApp, Instagram, and Apple’s iMessage, as it seeks to position itself as a full-fledged social network.
Voice Notes Take Center Stage
Users can now record and send audio messages lasting up to one minute. The feature reflects a growing trend, particularly among Gen Z, who increasingly prefer voice notes as a quicker, more personal alternative to text.
Photo and Video Sharing in Chats
The new update also allows users to send multiple images or videos in chats, either captured through the TikTok camera or selected from their gallery. Editing tools are available before sharing.
Safety Measures in Place
To prioritize user safety, TikTok has restricted first-time message requests. New senders cannot share photos or videos from their camera roll, and may only send content already available on TikTok. This measure is aimed at reducing spam and unsolicited media.
By strengthening its direct messaging features, TikTok is signaling its ambition to expand beyond entertainment, encouraging users to keep their conversations within the app instead of turning to other platforms.
