Tobacco Vendor Registration Begins Across Punjab
In accordance with the Punjab Tobacco Control Act of 1958, the Excise Taxation and Narcotics Control Department began registering and licencing tobacco merchants across Punjab on Friday.
Excise & Taxation Director General (DG) Muhammad Ali announced the campaign’s launch by saying, “The violator can be fined up to Rs. 100,000 while a media awareness campaign regarding the licence will also be launched.”
The Federal Ministry of Health District Coordinator for Tobacco Control Shehzad Iqbal, Director Rizwan Sherwani, Excise Additional DG Ahmed Saeed, Cathy Wright, and Khurram Hashmi from the anti-tobacco NGO The Union were also present.
According to Mr. Ali, the tobacco licencing charge will rise for the first time since 1958 and will do so at a rate of 15% annually. For the smallest hawker, it is presently Rs. 1000; for larger vendors, it is Rs. 5000–8000; and for the largest vendors, it is Rs. 15,000.
He also reiterated that the federal government and NGOs would help make Murree a tobacco-free city. He declared that the hill station would implement the national and international tobacco control agenda.
Ms. Wright emphasised the value of the licencing procedure as a crucial tool for reducing tobacco usage and pledged her organization’s full support for the Excise Department in this effort.
Additionally, DG Ahmad Saeed noted that Punjab will register more than 25,000 tobacco business units, which will boost tax income. He claimed that while licensing for the other businesses was still being processed, it had already been done for megastores.
