U.S. President Donald Trump has surprised many political observers by endorsing former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in the New York City mayoral race. The endorsement comes just hours before polling stations opened, adding unexpected tension to an already competitive election.
Cuomo, who is running as an independent, is facing Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa. Trump said that if Mamdani wins, federal funds for New York City could be affected. He described Mamdani as having no experience and claimed his policies would harm the city. Trump urged his supporters to back Cuomo instead of Sliwa, calling a vote for Sliwa a “vote for Mamdani.”
Current polls show Mamdani in the lead with around 45.8%, followed by Cuomo at 31.1%, and Sliwa at 17.3%.
Zohran Mamdani, who could become the first Muslim and African-born mayor of New York City, has gained strong support through a campaign focused on affordable transportation, rent freezes, and childcare programs funded by higher taxes on wealthy residents. Mamdani criticized Trump’s endorsement of Cuomo, saying it shows Cuomo would favor national political interests over the needs of New Yorkers. He argued that his own campaign represents fairness, dignity, and opportunity for working families.
Cuomo, who resigned as governor in 2021 after a sexual harassment investigation, is working to rebuild his public image. His campaign has turned toward moderate and conservative voters, and he has spoken against socialism. Cuomo welcomed Trump’s support indirectly, saying the race will likely depend on Republican voters. His campaign has also received major funding from wealthy donors, including hedge fund manager Bill Ackman.
Curtis Sliwa, the Republican nominee and founder of The Guardian Angels, now faces the challenge of running without Trump’s endorsement. He continues to focus on issues like crime, homelessness, and city services. Sliwa has also tried to separate himself from Trump’s immigration policies, presenting himself as a more independent conservative candidate.
The election has drawn unusually high participation, with more than 735,000 early ballots cast over nine days, showing how closely the public is watching this contest. With the surprise endorsement, shifting voter alignments, and a historic candidacy in play, New York City’s mayoral race has become one of the most unpredictable political events of the year.
