US President Donald Trump has confirmed that his administration is pushing ahead with trade talks with India, signaling a softer approach after months of friction. Trump said he expects to speak with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the coming weeks as both countries work toward a possible deal.

In a social media post, Trump described Modi as “a very good friend” and voiced optimism about the outcome of negotiations. “I feel certain that there will be no difficulty in coming to a successful conclusion for both of our great countries,” he said.

Modi welcomed the remarks, calling the United States and India “close friends and natural partners.” He added that both governments were working to wrap up the trade discussions quickly. “I am also looking forward to speaking with President Trump. We will work together to secure a brighter, more prosperous future for both our people,” Modi wrote.

The warmer tone comes after months of trade disputes. Earlier this year, Trump criticized India for delaying tariff cuts on US goods and later doubled tariffs on Indian imports to 50% after New Delhi refused to halt Russian oil purchases. Indian officials warned that the higher tariffs could reduce GDP growth by 0.5% in 2025.

Reports also suggest Trump has urged the European Union to impose 100% duties on imports from India and China, highlighting his tougher global trade stance.

Despite tensions, trade between the two countries remained strong in 2024, reaching $129 billion in goods. However, the US trade deficit with India stood at $45.8 billion, according to official data.

The renewed dialogue between Trump and Modi is seen as an effort to stabilize ties and keep trade cooperation on track amid broader geopolitical challenges.
